Laws and Policies Governing Cross-Lake Oil and Gas Pipelines and Electric Cable Transmission Lines

Energy companies are exploring a “new frontier” for the routing of pipelines and transmission cables: Lake Erie’s lakebed.  Lakebed utility projects have the potential to disturb nearshore and lakebed habitat, stir up pollution on the lake bottom, eliminate fish and wildlife habitat, and reduce fish populations.  Several large projects proposed for Lake Erie have been postponed, but could be revived while new, similar, proposals may be under development.

These pages outline state laws and policies for Ohio and New York.
