The River College Network

Given the scale and the multiplication of socio-environmental issues, it is obvious that sooner or later, major changes to human actions will need to be taken. The challenges are numerous: climate change, contamination, drinking water shortage, habitats destruction, resources depletion, threat to the genetic foundations of life, and loss of biodiversity. Changes in depth are needed to our lifestyles, our ways of production and consumption and in the quality of our human relationships. In this context, solidarity is essential; the participation of all actors - governments, citizens, enterprises, and other stakeholders - is required to make this "green" turn. Among the key players, the world of education is at the forefront. In this sense, colleges and universities are strategic places for the integration of environmental education and sustainable development.

Colleges and universities must play a strong role in education, research, policy development, information exchange and community outreach and support… They have the unique freedom to develop new ideas, comment on society, and engage in bold experimentation, as well as contribute to the creation of new knowledge(Cortese, 1992).

In Quebec, "The college is like the lungs of the society" (Robert Campeau, retired professor of sociology). Gradually, the colleges were established as a social hub and cultural role, particularly in the region ... "This has given rise to the development of regions" (Leo Desbiens, Educational Director)... they are real micro-societies, turbulent, vibrant, beating to the pace of ambient social climate (Gauchy, 2007,p.5).

Education for sustainable development has become to be seen as a process of learning to make decisions that consider the long-term future of the economy, ecology and equity of all communities…This represents a new vision of education, a vision that helps people of all ages better understand the world in which they live, addressing the complexity and interconnectedness of problem such as poverty, wasteful consumption, environmental degradation, urban decay, population grown, health conflict and the violation of human rights that threaten our future. The vision of education emphases a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to developing the knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future as well as changes in values, behaviour, and lifestyles (UNESCO, 2003).

It is from this perspective that the College Network project is developed. Building on the theoretical currents of social criticism and bio-regionalism and based on a scientific foundation, the project proposes an innovative approach to the integration of environmental education in the college curriculum. Thus, teachers, students, and leaders will work together to develop strategies and socio-environmental activities rooted in the ecological environment. The College Network project goes beyond the transmission of knowledge - it is a global project that takes into account, among other aspects, interdisciplinary work and the commitment of an entire community. It helps to ensure and enhance the environment for the benefit of all.
